Looking after your new tattoo
Fine line work heals beautifully when it's looked after. Follow this guide alongside the advice Cara gives you on the day. If anything differs, go with what Cara told you.
Healing, step by step
Leave the covering on
Keep the dressing on for as long as Cara advises, then remove it with clean hands.
Wash gently
Use lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with clean kitchen roll. Don't rub.
Moisturise lightly
Apply a very thin layer of fragrance-free aftercare balm two or three times a day. Too much can clog the skin.
Let it flake
Light flaking and itching are normal. Don't pick, scratch or peel. Let it come away on its own.
Avoid while healing
- Swimming pools, the sea, baths, saunas and hot tubs
- Direct sun and sunbeds
- Tight clothing rubbing on the tattoo
- Heavy exercise that makes the area sweat or stretch for the first few days
- Scented creams, perfume or fake tan on the area
Once it's healed
- Use a high-factor sun cream on the tattoo every time it's exposed. Sun is the biggest cause of fading in fine line work.
- Keep the skin moisturised.
- Share a healed photo with @caramurphy_murphyink.
When to get help
Some redness and tenderness for the first few days is normal. If you notice spreading redness, increasing pain or swelling, heat, pus, a bad smell or a fever, contact your GP or pharmacist straight away, then let Cara know.
